Testosterone is a hormone that produces very important effects in man. Some of these are increased energy and muscle strength, bone density, development, sexual function and libido. When testosterone fails or there is low testosterone

true physical, psychological and social problems occur in the male.

Consequently, testosterone replacement therapy, or TRT, is a low testosterone treatment which the patient will want to be informed.

Certainly, the patient should be well informed about their health problem, the types of low testosterone treatment, especially, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), the benefits and TRT side effects. Let’s start by describing this treatment, let´s see what TRT is

Testosterone Replacement Therapy- What TRT is?

TRT, or testosterone replacement therapy, is a treatment used for men with symptomatic male hypogonadism. This disorder leads to low testosterone with its associated symptoms. Poor sperm production is also called hypogonadism. Both conditions can occur in the same case.

How we detect male hypogonadism? Symptoms

The way to detect male hypogonadism is taking into account its symptoms. Low testosterone symptoms can be subtle or very obvious. These may include:

  • Low sexual desire
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Little energy levels
  • Fatigue
  • Little muscle mass
  • Low body or facial hair
  • Loss of concentration
  • Depression
  • Body discomfort
  • Irritability

As you would expect, Testosterone levels decline as the body ages. According to several studies, 20% of men over 60 and 50% of those over 80 suffer from deficits in testosterone levels.

However, there are some conditions not associated with old age that also generate low testosterone. Let´s see why it can happen.

Primary hypogonadism

It is also known as primary testicular insufficiency. It is produced by problems, such as injuries or infections, in the testicles.

Secondary hypogonadism

It occurs when a problem at the glandular level occurs, either in the hypothalamus or in the pituitary gland. These are the glands responsible for regulating the production of testosterone. Both types of hypogonadism can have congenital causes.

Low testosterone Treatments (TRT)

The application of TRT is delicate. It is not enough that a man manifest symptoms of low testosterone for TRT to be done. In addition, he has to be established clinically that his blood concentration levels are indeed abnormal.

There are several testosterone replacement therapies to recover testosterone levels. Some forms of treatment are as follows.

Low testosterone symptoms

Transdermal patch TRT

It is a skin patch. It can be placed on the upper body, for example, and it is applied once a day. Nevertheless, the patch has a side effect, it has a substance that produces the intensification of testosterone absorption and can cause skin irritation.

Gels TRT

On the market are transparent testosterone gels. The gel is applied to the skin, and testosterone is absorbed at the moment. Some products bring a pump that administers the exact dosage of gel recommended by the physician. In addition, some applicable gels come inside the nose.

However, you must ensure that people other than the man being treated come into contact with the gel. It can be dangerous for children an d pregnant women.

Mouth patch TRT

It is a patch, or tablet, that is used attached to the upper gum so that it discharges testosterone to the blood through the gum tissues. It can be placed just over an incisive tooth. This patch is used twice a day.

TRT Injections

TRT can be given by injecting it into the muscles. Injectable testosterone is the standard and most cost-effective TRT option. Testosterone injection is an oil-based solution that has been seen as the best testosterone replacement.

The hormone can be also applied by placing an implant in the soft tissues to gradually release it to the bloodstream.

Inserting testosterone granules is a minor surgical procedure, requiring local anesthesia. We can say this is the main restriction of this method of treatment. Besides, it is not recommended for older men.

It is the simplest method of delivering testosterone to the body, and of course, it is available. But many doctors advise against it because the hormone is required to pass the digestive system.

TRT side effects

Testosterone can have side effects on the liver. The have also some negative effects on the prostates. It can increase the risk of prostatic cancer.

TRT Benefits

Numerous patients inform about an enhancement in energy level, sexual desire and erection quality. Testosterone also increases muscle mass, bone density, and even insulin sensitivity in some patients. Besides, men often report an improvement in mood and decrease of depression.

After your clinical condition has been determined, the physician may recommend some treatment. For those men who have low testosterone, but have no symptoms, it isn’t recommended. Nor for those who have decreased their levels due to advanced age.

These restrictions in TRT are because the side effects that long-term administration of this hormone can have on the whole is not known.

Certainly, TRT has many benefits that will improve the quality of life of the patient. However, we always have to take into account the side effects of any treatment.
